Shark–seal interaction off South Africa’s west coast during the early Pliocene (5 Ma) (with corrigendum)

چکیده

A study of the Mio-Pliocene marine palaeoenvironment on South Africa’s west coast revealed aspects biology and behaviour fossil mammals. Close examination showed that seals from Langebaanweg suffered pathologies bore marks carnivore activity. This adds to our knowledge shark feeding in geological past is one a few studies sharks record. Two incomplete seal humeri with tooth are first documented evidence such behaviour. These injuries show no healing, which suggests animals were most likely scavenged.Significance:

Fossil rich deposits at contribute African fossils by placing them global context.
 five globally have carnivores seals.
 description white past.
shows this was place as early 5 million years ago.
The signs suggesting parsimonious explanation scavenging carcasses.

Waves in shallow water off west coast of India during the onset of summer monsoon

The wave growth characteristics during the onset of summer monsoon in a swell dominated open ocean at a location off the west coast of India at 14 m water depth are studied. 67% of the measured waves are due to the swells arriving from south and south-west and the balance was due to the seas from south-west to north-west. Wave age of the measured data indicates that the measured waves are young...

Observations of meteorological tsunamis along the south-west Australian coast

Tide gauge data were used to identify the occurrence, characteristics, and cause of tsunamis of meteorological origin (termed ‘meteotsunamis’) along the Western Australian coast. This is the first study to identify meteotsunamis in this region, and the results indicated that they occur frequently. Although meteotsunamis are not catastrophic to the extent of major seismically induced basin-scale...

Northern Hemisphere Glaciation during the Globally Warm Early Late Pliocene

The early Late Pliocene (3.6 to ∼3.0 million years ago) is the last extended interval in Earth's history when atmospheric CO2 concentrations were comparable to today's and global climate was warmer. Yet a severe global glaciation during marine isotope stage (MIS) M2 interrupted this phase of global warmth ∼3.30 million years ago, and is seen as a premature attempt of the climate system to estab...

20. EVOLUTION OF PLIOCENE CLIMATE CYCLICITY AT HOLE 806B (5-2 Ma): OXYGEN ISOTOPE RECORD

A detailed Pliocene oxygen isotope record from the Ontong Java Plateau, based on measurements of the surface-dwelling planktonic foraminifer Globigerinoides sacculifer, was produced for the period from 5 to 2 Ma. The record documents major longand short-term climate changes. The results show periods of enhanced ice volume at 4.6 to 4.3 Ma and after 2.85 Ma, a long-term warming trend from 4.1 to...
